Floor-Focused Desert Sunset Installation at Hotel Paseo

Layering the Desert Textures

For this Coachella festival Crocs x Journeys activation at Hotel Paseo, we built a floor-focused desert sunset backdrop to showcase a new shoe line. The main goal was to design a beautiful photo op where every angle framed the footwear perfectly for social media and editorial shots.

A golden barrel cactus's pot is covered by sand-color fabric while bright flowers are surrounding the cactus.

A mix of fabric, chicken wire, compostable trays, and eco-friendly water tubes made up the structure of the photo opp floral installation.

We wanted real depth for the photos, so we engineered the setup from the ground up:

  • Sourcing Local: We shaped dimensional sand dunes using chicken wire wrapped in black and sand-colored fabrics. We sourced the fabric from a community creative reuse thrift store out in Joshua Tree to give the textures more character.

  • Blending the Flora: To transition from the backing graphics to our focal flowers, we planted live desert cacti, succulents, and a potted palm from a local nursery. We mixed these in with tall cut flower stems.

Branding and Framing Logistical Logic

We carefully positioned the palm tree to frame the corporate signs without blocking the logos, and packed the ground layer with dense salal, ground flowers, and palm fronds to keep the visual focus low, right on the shoes. We even used sculpted kinetic sand up front for a clean, mess-free desert texture. Strategy and sustainability met the design aesthetic to make every shoe shot look flawless.

We used kinetic sand as a sustainable feature for this botanical installation because it is moldable, reusable, hypoallergenic, and less messy than regular sand.

Keeping It Eco-Friendly and Foam-Free

Like all our work, we built this installation entirely without single-use plastic floral foam. To support the tall flower stems and keep everything hydrated, we used Oshun Pouches and OLMS WaterPod Flower Tubes. The Oshun Pouch is an expandable, plant-based pouch filled with organic coconut coir that soak up water and offer a stable, zero-waste rigging alternative. The OLMS WaterPod Flower Tube is made from bagasse (sugarcane fiber) and bypasses petroleum-based plastics to offer a low-carbon, renewable solution. The tubes are not only reusable for up to 12 months but they’re also certified home-compostable, decomposing naturally in the soil. Perfect for floral arrangements and event work.
