funky florals for adventurous hearts

When Karen, a renowned California photographer who specializes in experience-focused elopements for couples inspired by nature, reached out to me about creating an elopement bouquet, I was thrilled. The request was for a small, hand-tied bouquet to be featured in a wedding shoot in the stunning Joshua Tree National Park. The theme was funky, colorful, and unique—perfect for a nature-loving couple seeking an unforgettable elopement experience.
Elopements have a special kind of magic. There's an intimate charm to them that big weddings sometimes miss. They’re often about two people deeply in love, seeking a meaningful and personal way to celebrate their commitment. The idea of designing a bouquet for such a heartfelt occasion filled me with joy.

I immediately set to work, envisioning a bouquet that would capture the wild, vibrant spirit of Joshua Tree. I included vivid pops of color—lavender, greens, yellows, fuchsia, and peach—and lots of texture. Flowers like chrysanthemum, aster, and clematis made an appearance, complemented by the unique shapes of Cleveland sage and phalaenopsis. Each element was carefully selected to embody the funky, unique vibe Karen described.

As the big day approached, I prepared the bouquet for the warm Southern California weather. Knowing the flowers would spend some time in a car, I provided a jar filled with water to keep them hydrated. I advised Karen to store the bouquet in the shade, ideally behind the front seats or in the foot areas, to avoid direct sunlight and ensure the blooms stayed fresh.
When Karen arrived to pick up the bouquet, the excitement was palpable. We exchanged a few words, shared smiles, and then she was off to meet the couple. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride as I watched the bouquet leave my studio, knowing it would play a part in such a significant day.
Later, when Karen sent me the photos, I was overjoyed. The newlyweds looked radiant against the backdrop of Joshua Tree’s dramatic landscapes. The bouquet, vibrant and full of life, was the perfect complement to their elopement. It added a touch of whimsy and color, standing out beautifully against the desert scenery.

The images captured the essence of their love story—two adventurous souls united in a place as wild and wonderful as their bond. The flowers had held up beautifully, their colors still bright and their textures intact. It was a testament to the care and thought put into every petal and leaf.

In the end, it wasn’t just about the flowers. It was about the experience—the joy of creating something unique and meaningful for a couple on one of the most important days of their lives. It was about being part of their story, even in a small way, and knowing that the bouquet we crafted added a bit of magic to their special day.

sustainability notes
This was a simple design, but we always make the eco-friendly effort.
The twine used to hand tie the bouquet is our beeswax hemp twine that is eco-friendly and ready to compost.
A few sprigs of greens and flowers were from our own garden.
A reusable jar was used as a water source.
